Eggs, gettem local if you can

Found a few interesting facts about the "natural" part of eggs today. I am definitely a proponent of buying local if you can. I happen to live in an area where I can do that, it just isn't always cheap or easy. My plan for the year is to really get our home garden going in order to help this problem. Fruit trees are not cheap though so I'm actually going to try growing a few literally from seed from a "local" organic piece of fruit. Same with some of the other items that we are going to grow. This year has been crazy dry and we are in the middle of the worst drought I can ever remember here. If it floods next year we will have very little fruits and veggies.
Anyway, eggs are very easy to buy locally here. If you can do it too, here's why you should.

Water water water....its everywhere, but not for long!

Ask anyone in my family and they will tell you that my 2 pet peeves are dehydrated people and the toilet paper roll being on backwards. I would say that about 99% of people dont drink enough water and it causes a variety of problems when houre just A LITTLE dehydrated.
The formula works like this....you should be drinking half your bodyweight I  ounces per day. So if you weigh 150 pounds you should be drinking 75 ounces of water a day or roughly 2.5 liters. There's a ton of information to back it up which I will post when im not typing from my phone. They Mayo clinic being a big one.
Headaches, diarrhea,  nausea, cramps, blurred vision, etc. Are just some of the symptoms it can cause. Did you know that if you dont drink any water for 3 or 4 hours that you are already partly dehydrated?  In athletes its 2 to 3 hours. YOU HAVE TO TRAIN/TEACH YOUR BODY TO HYDRATE PROPERLY. I'm sure some of you have heard that if your body is telling you that you're thirsty that youre already dehydrated. True. Don't wait for that to happen! You should have water with you 24/7 and be sipping off of it all day every day!
Part of what I'm trying to do is teach kids at a young age to learn to properly hydrate so that they can not only get more out of their body as an athlete but also so they won't suffer from some of the same problems their parents do. They are a generation that has been told that they will die younger than their parents for the first time in history! Nutrition, including hydration, plays a part in that.
Go drink some water!!! I'll be posting more on this subject,  dont worry!!

Movie Fed Up

Was warching Katie Couric this morning who is a part of the film Fed Up which comes out in theaters today. Its about the sugar epidemic in this country and how it is killing us. People would and will be shocked at how bad of a problem this is. But will people watch it? Will you pay 10$ to go to the movies to see this? Im guessing that most people won't or at least not the people who really need this kind of information.  When it is vastly cheaper to buy food thats bad for you, parents especially, dont think that it matters what you buy or what brand but as long as theres ENOUGH food on the table thats all that matters. Its insane. A lot more people have watched Supersize Me and Food Inc now that its on Netflix and Amazon Prime and we have had longer to digest how screwed up the corn industry and fast food industry are. But now we are talking about nearly THE ENTIRE FOOD INDUSTRY in America. Its all sugared up, all of it. One bowl of cereal is equal to 2 donuts! If youre not gonna see the movie, do the research. Avoid added sugar, read labels. The next generation is the first that is not slated to live longer than we are, and we are the only ones that can help to change that.

What it's all about. Why I'm starting this blog about all the crazy food info.

I'm a woman in my 40's and I've been a swim coach for 20 years now. I was a competitive swimmer my entire life and am still extremely involved in other sports as well. I surf, swim, practice yoga, and weight train daily but food seems to have the greatest impact on my life and my body. My allergies have gotten worse as an adult and my food allergies have gotten even worse than that. But it's not just about me. The athletes that I train have very little nutrition understanding and are really confused about what's good and what's bad and what to eat and what not to eat. That's the big reason why I wanted to start this blog. I'm not an expert, I'm just a lady with an opinion and trying to help decipher all the crazy information on food out there.
We are a culture that focuses on food for lots of reasons. It's social, we celebrate, we date, we train, we over eat, we have comfort food, movie food......and it goes on and on. But what do we need? What makes us stop craving? What are we missing? I'm hoping to share what I know and what I've researched and hopefully shed some light on it for my athletes, my self and hopefully for some others out there.
